Congratulations! Your Social Security disability benefits claim was approved.
As a Louisiana Social Security disability lawyer, most of my clients after their SSDI claim has been approved want to know WHEN WILL I GET THE DISABILITY BENEFITS I HAVE BEEN AWARDED?
It will usually take a few months for your benefits to start – AFTER YOU RECEIVE A FAVORABLE WRITTEN DECISION.
How Long After Approval For Disability Will I Get My Money?
The time it takes to start receiving benefits varies depending on your case:
Initial Application Approval
- If approved on your initial application, benefits typically start within 30-90 days after approval.
- This assumes you've completed the mandatory 5-month elimination period.
Approval After Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Hearing
- Expect a longer wait if your claim went through an ALJ hearing.
- ALJs in New Orleans and Metairie Social Security offices usually take 1-3 months to issue a written decision.
- After a favorable decision, it can take another 1-3 months for the payment processing center to start your current benefits.
How Long Does It Take to Get Disability Back Pay After Approval?
In some cases, Social Security may delay back payments to investigate:
- Whether you received any Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits
- If you have a pending SSI claim
If you haven't received benefits 60 days after your hearing, contact your local Social Security office.
If I Am Approved for SSDI Benefits, Do I Get Other Benefits?
Medicare
- Automatic eligibility 24 months after your disability onset date
- Coverage starts in the 25th month of SSDI entitlement
- SSA will send information about 3 months before your eligibility begins
Food Stamps
- SSDI recipients may qualify for Food Stamps
- A separate application is required
- Eligibility requirements vary
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- You may qualify for SSI in addition to SSDI
- Eligibility depends on your monthly SSDI benefit amount and other assets
Important Steps After Approval
- Wait for your written decision
- Be patient during the processing period (typically 1-3 months)
- If you have an SSI claim, schedule an appointment with your local Social Security office
- Keep track of important dates, especially for Medicare eligibility
- Consider applying for additional benefits like Food Stamps if needed
Remember, while the waiting period can be frustrating, your approved benefits are on their way. If you have any concerns or questions during this time, don't hesitate to reach out to your Social Security disability lawyer or local Social Security office for assistance.
